County XC Championships - 09/01/2010
A snowy afternoon on Brocks Hill Country Park provided the setting for this year’s Leicestershire and Rutland County Cross Country Championships.
The Senior Men’s Championships incorporated not only the Masters event, but also, for the first time in recent years, the Under 20 Men’s event. Owls dominated the race, filling 7 of the first 10 places in the 10km event to wrap up both the Senior and U20 team titles by a huge margin. Rory Fraser ran his first race on British soil since the summer to win his second County Senior Men’s title, to add to the one he won in 2008. Rory denied 21 year old Gaz Davies the chance to win his first Senior title, with Gaz only 6 seconds adrift. This ensured the Owls secured the Senior Mens County XC Title for the 21st consectuative year, having not lost it since 1989.
The third Owls counter was also the U20 champion, 17 year old Danny Hallam, having a storming run to beat his nearest challenger by over a minute. Former Champion Paul Miles was 6th, with the U20 team being completed by Josh Norman in 7th (2nd U20) and Sam Stabler 8th (3rd U20).
Jason Williams finished 10th overall, but also earnt his first County title after recently moving up to the Masters age group. The masters team collected the silver medals with Steve Platts and Mike Davies finishing well.
In the younger age groups, Niall McSharry and Will Bourne produced very strong performances to earn the silver and bronze medals respectively in the Under 17 Mens race. This helped the Owls to destroy the opposition in the team even, scoring just 13 points, along with Jake Boat (8th), Adam Pinkowski (16th) and Rupert Radley (18th).
In the Under 15 race, Jack Barber ran well to finish 12th, while Ben Taylor finished 16th in the Under 13s event.
